Press Release: City of Benicia Receives Prestigious Award for Local Government

City of Benicia Receives Prestigious Award for Local Government for Communication and Transparency of Budget Challenges

The City of Benicia received a Helen Putnam Award in the category of internal administration at the League of California Cities CalCities Conference on October 17, 2024.

Established in 1982, the Helen Putnam Award for Excellence recognizes the outstanding achievements made by California's 483 cities. These winning cities have made unique contributions to community residents and businesses, contributions which have resulted in lower costs or more effective delivery of services.

The award was received in recognition of transparency and communication efforts regarding the city’s budget challenges and Resiliency Plan. The year-long process of community information and engagement included extensive outreach to residents to engage and inform on the city’s financial challenges.

“We are honored to be recognized for the work in communicating and engaging residents on the city’s budget challenges,” said Benicia City Manager Mario Giuliani. “The Benicia community believed in themselves and, through community engagement, helped create a model for other cities to emulate.”

The category of internal administration recognizes efficiencies in fiscal aspects of operations, demonstration of effectiveness in communicating information on the condition of a city's finances and fiscal condition, innovative budgeting providing optimum use of resources, public records access and clarity and improvements in communications and information management.
