Press Release: City of Benicia Invites Input on Creating a Walkable, Bike-Friendly Eastern Gateway

The City of Benicia invites residents to provide input on the Eastern Gateway Infrastructure Master Plan at two upcoming workshops:

In-Person Workshop
February 5, 2025 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Benicia Community Center, 370 East L Street

Virtual Workshop
February 12, 2025 from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Zoom link available at www.ci.benicia.ca.us/easterngateway

The workshops will focus on pedestrian and cyclist experiences in the Eastern Gateway, the area surrounding the intersection of Military East and East Fifth Street.  This area, rezoned in 2022 to support mixed-use and multi-family housing, aims to transform into a vibrant, walkable and bike-friendly community. However, existing infrastructure poses barriers to development.

The Eastern Gateway Infrastructure Master Plan, grant funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission/Association of Bay Area Governments, will identify solutions to these barriers and outline steps for infrastructure improvements and public space enhancements, including a vision for a walkable and bike-friendly neighborhood. The project kicked off in fall 2024 with an estimated completion in spring 2026.

Community outreach and engagement is a key part of the process, with community workshops, stakeholder meetings and Planning Commission and City Council study sessions. Updates will be shared on the city’s website, social media, mailers, email distribution lists, City of Benicia This Week announcements and the Engage Benicia Community Platform.
