Public Education

Fire safety education refers to precautions that are taken to prevent or reduce the likelihood of a fire that may result in death, injury, or property damage, alert those in a structure to the presence of a fire in the event one occurs, better enable those threatened by a fire to survive, or to reduce the damage caused by a fire.  Fire safety measures include those that are planned during the construction of a building or implemented in structures that are already standing, and those that are taught to occupants of the building.

  • Fire Extinguisher Training:
    Training on the use of portable fire extinguishers is available upon request to business, community and residential groups.

  • CPR Training:
    Hands-Only™ CPR Can Save Lives.  Most people who experience cardiac arrest at home, work or in a public location die because they don't receive immediate CPR from someone on the scene. As a bystander, don't be afraid. Your actions can only help.

  • Home Safety Inspection Program:
    Home safety inspections are provided to residents of the City upon request.  Smoke alarms are checked and home safety is addressed.

  • Home Smoke Alarm Program:  Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery

    The Benicia Fire Department participates in the Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery program.  We offer free 9-volt batteries to Benicia residents during the fall day-light savings time period.  The batteries are for use in home smoke alarms.  Fire Engine Companies can help with battery replacement and answer your questions upon request.

  • Juvenile Fire Setter Education Program:
    • Who Are Fire Setters?

      Some children experiment with fire out of curiosity.  These children will benefit by learning basic fire safety.  When children are exposed to crises situations - family arguments, loss of a loved one, move to a new home or school, or illness - they may react by starting fires.  This is a cry for help.  Classes for these children emphasize the dangers of fire, how fast fire spreads, and the damage fire causes.

    • Consequences:
      Parents and children can be held responsible for civil and/or criminal damages caused by juvenile fire setters.  Early intervention can help prevent these consequences.

    • We offer:
      Families are referred to our program by parents, schools, the Youth Services Bureau and other concerned individuals.  We are available for assistance.  We will help you with class dates and times.  If counseling is appropriate, we will refer you to a counselor.

    • Educational Classes:
      Educational classes for parents and children are scheduled on an as-needed basis.  The classes emphasize consequences, making the right choices and taking responsibility.  Basic fire safety is also taught.
