Construction Permit Exemptions

The City of Benicia has adopted Appendix H of the California Building Code, which establishes the following exemptions from a construction permit. (Please note: a sign permit from the Planning Division may still be required.)

  • Painted non-illuminated signs
  • Temporary real estate signs advertising the sale or rental of a property
  • Signs erected by public entities responsible for transportation
  • Projecting signs that do not exceed a certain size, such as 2.5 square feet
  • Changing movable parts or the repainting or repositioning of existing display content on an approved sign is typically not considered an alteration requiring a new permit
