LIFEGUARD TRAINING/CERTIFICATION 

This course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness. Students who complete this course successfully will be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training/First Aid and CPR/AED for Lifeguards (valid for 2 years).  If you have questions regarding this class, please call 707-746-4772.

Ages 15 and up (must turn 15 on or before the last scheduled day of the course)

Prerequisite Swimming Evaluation will be tested at the start of class on day 1:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously (freestyle or breaststroke) demonstrating rhythmic breathing
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds --
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
    • Surface dive, feet or head first to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
    • Surface and swim 20 yards on back with both hands holding the object
    • Exit the water without using ladder or steps


Certification Requirements:

  • Students must attend all classes
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills/activities and final rescue skill scenarios
  • Pass written exams with minimum grades of 80

    Location note:  James Lemos Pool will be the site for in-water skills and Benicia Community Center will be the site for first aid and classroom skills. 

What to bring:  Lunch, water, snacks, swim suit, towel & sunscreen.
