Mission
The Benicia Fire Department Reserve Firefighter Program’s primary mission is to:
- Provide the citizens and visitors in the community with an increase in trained personnel.
- Mentor, develop, and prepare candidates who wish to pursue a career in the fire service.
- Increase and improve the pool of potential candidates for future positions within the department.
Benicia Fire Department Reserve Firefighters will participate in education, training, and experiences that will assist them in pursuing careers as professional firefighters.
Job Description
Under general supervision of a Fire Captain, the Reserve Firefighter responds to alarms, rescue and other emergency calls, assists in protecting life and property endangered by fire or other hazards, administers first aid, and participates in fire prevention activities including inspecting commercial and residential structures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local fire prevention laws and regulations. The Reserve Firefighter also participates in regular training, drills and study activities, assists in the maintenance of fire stations, apparatus, and equipment, may participate in scheduled public relations activities, and performs other duties as assigned. Recruitment Process
- Submit completed application with current DMV printout along with documentation of meeting minimum qualifications to Division Chief Carl Littorno at clittorno@ci.benicia.ca.us. Applications will be continuously accepted and recruitment will be done as needed.
- Participate in and pass an oral board interview
- Complete Live Scan fingerprint check
- Complete a background check
- Complete medical examination and drug test
Minimum Qualifications & Special Requirements
- Age: Must be at least 18 years of age by the date of appointment
- Education: High school graduate or equivalent (GED)
- License and Driving Record: Must possess a valid California State Motor Vehicle Operator’s License by the date of appointment. Clean DMV record with no major violations (DUI, Hit and Run, etc.) for 36 months and no more than one minor violation during the last 12 months.
- Special Requirements: Must be continually enrolled in at least one Fire Science or EMS related class at an accredited college or university, or be enrolled in other pre-approved courses.
- Schedule: Reserve Firefighters must work a minimum of two, 12hr shifts per month with their assigned officer/shift.
- Physical: Must be in excellent physical condition having passed the California Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the past twelve months prior to appointment, and must also pass a city provided medical exam and drug test.
- Residency: Must reside within 50 air miles of Fire Station-11
Certification
- Must possess a current CPR provider card at time of appointment.
- Must maintain a current CPR provider card.
- Completion of a Firefighter 1 Academy (must be completed within 18 months of appointment)
- Completion of BLS level 1st Responder Medical Training
- Must possess a valid Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate within two years of appointment.
