Values, Inclusion, Belonging, and Equity = VIBE!

The City of Benicia is committed to increasing equity and inclusion in City activities. The VIBE team, a group of rotating volunteer employees from different departments and divisions throughout the City, was created to propel and advance this work internally. The purpose of the VIBE team is to help the City foster an environment that values and actively promotes diversity, ensures equitable access and treatment, and cultivates inclusion for all individuals—both within the city organization and in our interactions with the public.

VIBE OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSES:

1. Promote Diversity

  • Contribute ideas for attracting, recruiting, and retaining a workforce that reflects the community the organization serves.
  • Celebrate and leverage the strengths that diversity brings to innovation, problem-solving, and public service.

2. Advance Equity

  • Make City leadership aware of systemic barriers that prevent equal opportunities for employees and stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to promote equitable outcomes through fair policies, practices, and resource distribution, recognizing and addressing the unique needs of historically marginalized or underrepresented groups.

3. Foster Inclusion

  • Create a culture where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their full potential.
  • Encourage dialogue, collaboration, and engagement among employees and stakeholders to build mutual understanding.
  • Recommend education and training to combat unconscious bias, discrimination, and exclusion.

4. Champion Community Engagement

  • Strengthen public trust by demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity.
  • Emphasize transparency and commitment to continuous improvement.
